Dorset buttons are named for the button-making cottage industry that originated in Dorset County, England in the early 1600's. The buttons were originally made by wrapping cloth around rings of sheep's horn, but as the craft evolved makers began to also use yarn wrapped around brass, plastic, or wood rings. Dorset buttons were generally not used for fastenings, but were worn as decoration, and the designs span from very simple to very complex.

In this class, you will be introduced to the process of making one of the basic types of Dorset buttons -- the Old Dorset Crosswheel -- which can be used alone as a brooch or shawl pin, or combined with other Dorset buttons to create a stunning necklace or decorative piece. If time allows, we will also explore a number of other Dorset button designs.

Skills taught in this class include:

  • Preparing a foundation ring (Casting & Slicking)
  • Placing the "spokes" (Laying)
  • Weaving the button fill design (Rounding)

Skill Level: No previous experience is required to take this class.

Supplies to bring to class: (registered students receive 10% off class supply purchases, excluding patterns)

  • All supplies for your first button are included in your class fee. You may purchase additional supplies on the day of class at the class-discounted price, if you wish to make more buttons after the class is over. For each button we use:
    • 2" - 3" wooden or plastic drapery ring
    • DK or Worsted weight yarn in a variety of colors. You will need a total of 20 yards: The bulk is used for wrapping the button foundation, with small amounts needed of each of the other colors. Suggested yarn: Rauma Strikkegarn
