The Violet Protest is the brain-child of artist Ann Morton. Ann envisions The Violet Protest as a nation-wide, non-partisan effort to send 50 hand-made textile squares to each member of the 2021 Congress in support of the following core American values:

  • Civility & Respect
  • Citizenship
  • Compromise
  • Country over Party & Corporate Influence
  • Courage
  • Candor
  • Compassion
  • Creativity

That's a total of 26,750 squares!

The Violet Protest squares are to be 8" x 8" in size, made using equal amounts of red and blue fiber, so that the overall impression is the color violet. In this way, the colors red and blue, which have long been associated with political division in our country, will come together to produce a visual metaphor for Unity.

Northfield Yarn has signed up to create at least 25 squares, and YOU are invited to help us reach that goal (or exceed it). We plan to send in our squares in early July, so if you'd like to include your square(s) with our submission, please email Jody at Admin@NorthfieldYarn.com for more information about dropping off your squares.

YOU are invited to join us during Online Open Stitch sessions on Thursday evenings (6-8 pm) and Friday and Saturday mornings (10 am - noon) to work on your squares. Jody will be available during the Friday morning Open Stitch sessions to answer questions specifically about Violet Protest.

For more information visit the Online Open Stitch page in our Online Shop and register for Open Stitch by adding it to your cart and completing the entire "purchase" procedure. It's free, but you need to do all the steps to be added to the list and receive invitations to the weekly Zoom** sessions.

Contact Jody at Admin@NorthfieldYarn.com if you have any questions.

Before heading off to Washington D.C., finished squares will be on display at the Phoenix Art Museum. It is Ann Morton's hope that all 50 states will be represented by the makers. You can see an artist's rendering of how the squares will be displayed, as well as more information about the project and the project progress on The Violet Protest Web site.

If you'd like to help spread the word about the Violet Protest, you can download an informational flyer to post about the project. Individuals can also sign up to submit a certain number of squares, but please help us meet our organizational goal, too!
