Have you always wanted to make a Fair Isle tam, but thought that it was too difficult because of ALL THOSE COLORS?!?

This class aims to demystify Fair Isle knitting, which has a maximum of only TWO colors in any given row!

You will learn:

  • Two-color techniques for knitting in the round.
  • How to do a "speed swatch."
  • What is meant by "yarn dominance."
  • How to hold your yarns.

AND, you'll create a jaunty tam!

Skill Level: Intermediate

Prerequisites: To be successful in this class, you should be comfortable knitting flat, knitting in the round, knitting small circumference in the round, increasing, decreasing, and knitting stockinette and ribbed stitches.

Homework: There is no homework prior to the 1st session, but you may have homework to complete after the 1st and 2nd sessions, in order to be ready for the following session.

Supplies to bring to class:
(registered students receive 10% off class supply purchases)

  • Yarn: You have two options:
    • Option 1: Purchase the Dutton Farm Tam kit (available in 3 colorways). The kit includes the pattern and all the yarn you'll need.
    • Option 2: Pick your own colors of Jamieson & Smith 2-ply Jumper Weight (25g, 125, 115m). You will need one ball each of 4 colors. You will use almost the entire ball of your darkest color and partial balls of the other three.
  • Pattern: A copy of the Dutton Farm Tam pattern, available for purchase in the shop ($5). If you chose to purchase a complete Dutton Farm Tam kit, the yarn and pattern are included in the kit.
  • Needles: To achieve gauge of 28 sts = 4 inches in colorwork pattern. You'll be swatching during the 1st session to determine your gauge. Bring the suggested needle sizes listed below, plus smaller and larger sizes, if you have them.
    • 16" US 3 (or size required to achieve gauge)
    • US 3 DPNS (or size required to achieve gauge)
    • 16" US 1 (or two sizes smaller than your larger size)
  • Notions: Stitch markers, transparent tape or another way to mark your place in the chart, paper, pencil, etc.
