Mosaic Knitting is a lesser-known technique for doing colorwork. By using slip-stitches with stockinette stitch, you can create charted patterns without having to carry the yarn or create "floats" on the wrong side of your knitting. Often, the wrong side of your knitting is as interesting as the right side!

In this class you will learn:

  • How mosaic knitting works to create a design
  • How to read a chart for mosaic knitting colorwork
  • Some of the ways mosaic knitting can add interest to your knitting projects

You will be learning the technique while completing the class exercises. There won't be time to complete an entire project in class, but you will take away the basic understanding needed for reading mosaic knitting patterns, such as Andrea Mowry's popular "Nightshift" shawl, "The Shift" cowl, or "Shiftalong" hat.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate. To be successful in this class you must be comfortable casting on, completing knit, purl, and slip stitches, and reading basic knitting patterns.

Supplies to bring to class: (registered students receive 10% off class supply purchases, excluding patterns)

  • Yarn: 2 balls of DK or Worsted weight yarn in contrasting colors
  • Needles: Size called for on the ball band of your chosen yarn
