This class is intended as a follow-up class to "The Shape of Shawls: Techniques for Better Fit," although participation in the earlier class is not required in order to register for this class. If you did not take the techniques class, please be sure you have the skills listed below and have chosen your pattern.

In this class you will:

  • learn how to modify a pattern
  • knit a shawl based on your own modifications
  • liberate yourself from following patterns blindly

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner. To be successful in this class, you should be comfortable knitting and purling, as well as know how to increase using yarn-overs and decrease stitches (k2tog). You should also feel comfortable with making changes to (dinking with) patterns.

Supplies to bring to class: (registered students receive 10% off class supply purchases, excluding patterns)

  • Pattern: You may use one of the patterns recommended in the techniques class (all are free Ravelry downloads):
  • Yarn: Check your pattern for yardage. Please have at least one skein wound into a ball or cake, ready to cast on.
  • Needles: Circular or straight needles that will create a draped, open fabric with your chosen yarn. Bring several sizes so you can play with gauge.
  • Notions & Other Supplies: Safety pin-style markers, so you can move them around easily. Scissors and other regular knitting supplies. Paper & pencil or pen for taking notes.
