The Violet Protest is the brain-child of artist Ann Morton. She envisions it as a nation-wide, non-partisan effort to send 50 hand-made textile squares to each member of the 2021 Congress in support of the following core American values:
Civility & Respect
Country over Party & Corporate Influence
That's a total of 26,750 squares!
The Violet Protest squares are to be 8" x 8" in size, made using equal amounts of red and blue fiber, so that the overall impression is the color violet. In this way, the colors red and blue, which have long been associated with political division in our country, will come together to produce a visual metaphor for Unity.
Northfield Yarn has signed up to create at least 25 squares, and YOU are invited to help us reach that goal (or exceed it).
** NOTE:The IN-STORE work sessions have been temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 crisis, and we are unable to collect squares as long as the shop remains closed. Please check our post about Our Response to COVID-19 for more information about when we hope to have the store open and begin shipping products again.
However, you are invited to join us during Online Open Stitch sessions on Thursday evenings (6-8 pm) and Friday and Saturday mornings (10 am - noon) to work on your squares. Jody will be available during the Friday morning Open Stitch sessions to answer questions specifically about Violet Protest.
For more information visit theOnline Open Stitch page in our Online Shop and register to receive an invitation to our Zoom** online space.
Contact Jody at Admin@NorthfieldYarn.com if you have any questions.
Before heading off to Washington D.C., finished squares will be on display at the Phoenix Art Museum. It is Ann Morton's hope that all 50 states will be represented by the makers. You can see an artist's rendering of how the squares will be displayed, as well as more information about the project and the project progress on The Violet Protest Web site.
If you'd like to help spread the word about the Violet Protest, you can download an informational flyer to post about the project. Individuals can also sign up to submit a certain number of squares, but please help us meet our organizational goal, too!
